Reykjavik is a buzzing city with a welcoming atmosphere and vibrant architecture. Staying downtown will keep you within close proximity of all the must-see attractions the city has to offer, most of them even within walking distance. The main area, the so-called downtown Reykjavik, is considered to be within the border of the postal code 101 (and 105) so, when looking up addresses, it will be easy to spot which ones have considered downtown and which ones aren’t. The closest postal codes to 101 are 105,107, 108, 170-172 and 104.

Reykjavík itself is a city of about 220.000 people and it is spread over an area of about 274.5 km². Its neighboring towns, Hafnarfjörður, Garðabær, Kópavogur, Mosfellsbær and Seltjarnarnes are usually spoken of as a part of the Capital Region and are all easily reachable by bus or a maximum of 15-20 min driving from Reykjavík.

The Ion City Hotel is the answer to the famous Ion Adventure Hotel at Nesjavellir where you should stay in Reykjavík. Situated at a great location right on Laugavegur Street the hotel is greatly equipped with a fitness center and a 5-star restaurant called Sumac that you cannot miss. For decades Icelanders have been coming to this place for the Sandholt bakery for some delicious baked goods and to the gentleman’s tailor next door for some well-fitted suits and now this is where you can find one of the best hotels in town. 2. Hotel Borg – The 1st Runner Up

The oldest hotel in Iceland right in the city center and the one with the most interesting history. At the time it was built Icelanders didn’t have any hotels they could proudly offer to visitors but as it turned out also no funds to build one. But by the good graces of an Icelandic wrestling master and philanthropist; Johannes, the project was started to build one. This building project became Hotel Borg. Today the Art Deco hotel is kept in excellent shape and recently Jamie’s Italian restaurant open up on the ground floor to serve as a secondary restaurant to the hotel. There the breakfast buffet is served in the morning and the guests are raving about it.

The Hotel overlooks the beautiful Austurvöllur Square and is only a few steps away from Althing Icelandic Parliament and Dómirkjan, Reykjavík’s Cathedral. Hotel Borg has an impressive amount of rooms and suites for a hotel built in this time, 99 to be exact and the Art Deco style runs throughout with its elegance but still with a mixture of modern amenities. 1. Icelandair Hotel Marina – The Winner

The Icelandair Hotel Marina is hard to beat, in every aspect. We have found that at the average time, you can find accommodation ranging from 15.550 ISK (127 USD) to about 53.000 (450 USD) for the night. This would usually mean a room for two.

How to get from Keflavik Airport to Reykjavik Hotels

There are a few options when trying to get yourself from Keflavik International Airport to Reykjavik Hotels and vice versa.

  • Bus: You can easily jump on the Fly Bus option from Keflavik to Reykjavik Hotels, both affordable and quick.

  • Taxi: You can take the taxi option but will be paying about 200 USD for the ride.

  • Rental: You can, of course, get a rental car at the airport and most of the hotels offer some sort of parking area which you can ask about in the lobby.
