Itinerary

Thorsmork, a beautiful valley surrounded by glaciers and mountains, is the setting for today’s day tour. Your hiking adventure starts at the meeting point in Hvolsvöllur town, situated around 100 km East of Reykjavik on the southern coast.

You’ll be collected from the meeting point in a thrilling super jeep, ready to handle the roads of the Icelandic highlands to bring you to the hike’s starting point. Your expert jeep driver will then drive towards Thorsmork Valley, where the day’s hiking tour will take place.  There will also be one of our knowledgeable and friendly local guides on board, ready to point out any interesting points, tell stories and answer any questions from curious minds!

On your journey, we will be passing the Gígjökull glacier, where you will see some of the effects of the Eyjafjallajökull outlet glacier from where a major glacial flood grandly cascaded during the 2010 eruption. This is a great opportunity to see something seen by so few in person.

Once in the heart of Thorsmork Valley, you will start your hike, a hugely popular hiking route among locals in Iceland. The glacier view along with the surrounding mountains and vibrant colors make this hike truly outstanding. The hike length is around 8-10 km in total (approximately 3-4 hours) with an elevation gain of around 400 meters, so bear this in mind when considering your fitness level.

The Thorsmork hiking tour should not be missed by any outdoor enthusiasts visiting Iceland. Get physically active while you enjoy one of the most scenic places you will ever come across. In Thorsmork, every season has its charm, giving you a great opportunity to visit again and again. A super Jeep seats 5 – 16 persons so our tours are always a small group experience, allowing you the space to relax and plenty of time to ask our expert guides as many questions as you wish.

  • The entire hiking trail is about 8 km (optional).
  • It's possible to add pick-up & drop-off from Hvolsvöllur, Hella, Reykjavík, Selfoss, and Vík.
  • It's possible to add snowmobiling (only available from the 1st of November to the 15th of June).

The meeting point for this day hiking tour is the Brú Base Camp located in Hvolsvöllur.

The meeting time is at 9:00 am or 10:00 am depending on the season, more accurate information will be sent after booking the tour.
