Get ready for a sensational 9-hour trip starting from Reykjavik! Right after pick-up, we'll head out into the fresh morning air for a lovely drive along the Golden Circle. There, we'll soak in the history of Thingvellir National Park, get up close to the breathtaking Gullfoss Falls, and witness the incredible geysers of the Haukadalur Valley in action!
You will have plenty of time to enjoy and photograph each attraction as your local guide shares fascinating stories about them. On the way back, we will make a quick stop at the Kerið Crater. Then, in the evening, you will be treated to some traditional Icelandic bathing rituals at the geothermal Sky Lagoon.
Our adventure begins with a scenic 45-minute drive to the first stop on the Golden Loop: Þingvellir National Park. This UNESCO-recognized site is where the country's first parliament, Althingi (Alþingi), was born. As soon as you enter this historic place, you'll notice the unique geological features like gorges and ravines. Such terrains result from the movement of the two tectonic plates between which the park lies. You will have a one-of-a-kind opportunity to walk in the famous Rift Valley, which is located right in the middle of the North American and Eurasian continents.
Get ready for the second wonder of the day as we head to the breathtaking double-tiered Gullfoss Waterfall. You will hear the sound of its thundering waters before you even see it. This massive giant can carry up to 5,000 cubic feet of water per second (140 cubic meters per second). We’ll admire its never-ending flow from the lower and the upper viewing platforms. While you take pictures, your guide will share the inspiring story of the falls. You might also find out why it is called the “Golden Waterfall.”
We'll wrap up our Golden Route with a visit to the Hakadalur Valley. This hot spring area is teeming with all kinds of fascinating geothermal activity that you will be able to observe up close. We’ll walk past numerous steam vents, boiling mud pots, mineral-stained fumaroles, and, of course, impressive water-shooting geysers.
You will see the legendary Geysir that gave the name to all the other erupting springs in the world. Iceland’s most active geyser, Strokkur, will amaze you with its power. Every 4-10 minutes, it shoots fountains reaching up to 65.6 feet (20 meters)!
On the way back, we will stop by the place often called the "Eye of the World." Kerid Crater is a water-filled volcanic lake that formed 6,500 years ago. You will be able to hike down one of the red-colored walls to reach the contrasting aquamarine pool at the bottom. This stunning attraction is worth the visit in every season. In summer, the slopes are covered with green moss, and all the colors pop against each other. In winter, the lake freezes and turns an even brighter blue - perfect for photos.
After all that exploring, it's time to relax and unwind in one of the world's finest geothermal spas. The Sky Lagoon is a modern wellness center just a few minutes' drive from the capital. You'll get to experience a traditional 7-step skincare ritual. It starts with a soak in the warm lagoon, followed by a cold plunge. Then, you'll relax in a sauna with an amazing view of the North Atlantic Ocean. This is followed by a refreshing mist, exfoliating scrub, and a steam room, and ends with a warm shower. It’s a perfect conclusion to our adventurous day.
