Sólheimajökull Glacier Edge Walk: Easy 2-Hour Family-Friendly Tour
New Tour

About tour

Glacier’s Edge is an easy 2-hour educational walk along Sólheimajökull’s lagoon to the ice. It’s a family-friendly way to get close to the glacier, with children of all ages welcome. You won’t need crampons, a harness, or climbing skills. The mostly flat gravel route passes a meltwater river and moraines.

Your certified guide turns the tour into a short glacier lesson: how the ice formed, how it moves and shapes the valley, why it’s striped with black volcanic ash, and how fast it’s retreating. At the ice edge, you’ll look out over the lagoon, which is about 60 m (197 ft) deep, and may see icebergs floating on the water. You’ll stop by the shore for hot chocolate or coffee and cookies before walking back to the meeting point.

Itinerary

You'll meet your guide at the Arctic Adventures yellow school bus in the Sólheimajökull parking lot. This route covers 2.5 to 3 km (1.6 to 1.9 mi) in total. The gravel paths are uneven in places but mostly flat. Nobody walks on the ice, so you won’t need crampons, a harness, or an ice axe. Before you set off, you’re given a helmet and hiking poles.

The first stretch follows a meltwater river to the lagoon. Along the way, you’ll pass low ridges of rock that might look ordinary until your guide shows you what they reveal about the glacier’s past. You’ll also learn why the lagoon keeps changing as the ice moves back.

The path then brings you close to the glacier’s edge. You may see icebergs on the water and black bands running through the ice. Your guide will explain where the ash came from and why it can either speed up or slow down melting. Stay on the marked trail to protect the fragile ground around the glacier.

The walk will pause for hot chocolate, coffee, and cookies on a black-sand stretch beside the lagoon, with icebergs on the water and a close-up view of the glacier perfect for photos. From there, the footpath follows the shore back to the school bus meeting point.

  • This tour is rated Easy. No previous experience is needed, but you should be comfortable covering 2.5 to 3 km (1.6 to 1.9 mi) on mostly flat gravel paths that are uneven in places.
  • The route follows the path to the edge of the ice and does not continue onto it, so you don't need crampons, a harness, or an ice axe.
  • Hiking boots are not mandatory on this tour. Comfortable closed shoes are fine, and boots are available to rent if you'd prefer them.
  • Children must be accompanied by an adult for the whole walk.

No, this tour stays on the path beside the edge of Sólheimajökull, where the ice meets the lagoon. You’ll get close to the ice and lagoon without using crampons or other glacier-hiking gear. It’s a good choice for families with children, and those who want a shorter, easier experience.

Glacier's Edge is a 2-hour walk to the ice on a mostly flat path, with no crampons. Glacier Experience is a 4-hour Sólheimajökull glacier hike of about 6 km (3.7 mi) on the glacier itself, with crampons, for ages 8 and up. It's rated Easy–Moderate and needs hiking boots with ankle support. Choose Glacier's Edge for young kids or an easy pace, and Glacier Experience if you want to walk on the ice.

Maybe. Icebergs sometimes float in the lagoon after breaking off the glacier, but this changes from day to day. Either way, you'll see the ice up close, streaked with black volcanic ash. The black-sand stop by the shore gives you a clear view for photos.

Yes, kids can join, as long as an adult stays with them for the whole walk. The route covers 2.5 to 3 km (1.6 to 1.9 mi) on mostly flat gravel paths, with a few uneven patches. There's a break for hot chocolate and cookies by the lagoon, which gives little legs a rest. Helmets and hiking poles are provided for everyone.

Yes. It's rated Easy, with no climbing and no time on the ice, and the path is close to flat. You'll cover 2.5 to 3 km (1.6 to 1.9 mi) in about 2 hours, with a break by the lagoon. Hiking poles are provided for extra support on the uneven patches.

Wear warm layers with a waterproof jacket on top, plus a hat and gloves, because it can feel cold next to the ice. Comfortable closed shoes are fine, and you can rent hiking boots if you prefer. Avoid jeans, which get heavy and cold when wet. Bring a reusable water bottle too.

Drive east from Reykjavík on Route 1 (the Ring Road), then turn onto Road 221 toward the glacier. It's about 165 km (103 mi) from Reykjavík, just over 2 hours 20 minutes in good conditions, or 31 km (19 mi) from Vík. The tour doesn't include pickup, so you'll meet your guide at the Arctic Adventures yellow school bus in the parking lot. Allow extra time in bad weather or winter road conditions.

Yes. Parking costs 750 ISK ($5.50 / €5, September 2026) for a standard car, plus a small transaction fee. You can pay on Parka.is up to 24 hours after you leave, since cameras record license plates.

No. The walk follows gravel paths with uneven patches, and the route isn’t wheelchair accessible. If you have questions about whether the walk will suit your needs, please contact us before booking.

The tour can still go ahead in rainy or windy conditions, which is typical in Iceland, so come prepared with warm, waterproof clothing. If the weather makes the walk unsafe, we’ll cancel it and refund you in full. If your plans change instead, you can cancel a booking through My Adventures up to 24 hours before departure.
