The History of Lýsuhólslaug

Lýsuhólslaug dates back to the 1940s when a local farmer discovered the natural hot spring on his land. Recognizing the potential of the spring, the farmer built a small pool around it in an attempt to encourage visitors to use it recreationally. Decades since the pool has been expanded and modernized to accommodate visitors from across the globe. Now a popular attraction, this is the ideal hotspot for those looking to experience Iceland’s magical outdoors.

The Geothermal Pool

One of the unique features of Lýsuhólslaug is the quality of its geothermal water. The water in the pool is naturally heated by the Earth’s geothermal activity to a perfect temperature ranging between 37°C to 39°C. The pool is also rich in minerals, such as sulfur, silica and magnesium, all of which are believed to have therapeutic properties helping to alleviate various ailments.

The chlorella algae in the pool makes the water green, and no chemicals, such as chlorine, are added to the water.

Thanks to the calming nature of Lýsuhólslaug, visitors often leave feeling relaxed and rejuvenated after a long soak in its mineral-rich waters.

Facilities at Lýsuhólslaug

Aside from the hot spring, Lýsuhólslaug also has a steamy sauna and a cold water tub for visitors to enjoy. Traditional Icelandic ‘hot-cold’ therapy involves alternating between hot and cold temperatures to stimulate the body’s circulation. Some people use this form of therapy to relieve joint pain, as the process can help reduce any inflammation and swelling. Visitors can warm up in the sauna before taking a plunge in the cold water tub, which can bring many health benefits!

There is a wide range of on-site facilities at Lýsuhólslaug, including changing rooms, showers and a café. Serving snacks and beverages, this is the perfect spot to unwind after a soak in the bubbling pool.

Lýsuhólslaug Opening Times

During the summer (June-Mid August), the pool has a set opening time of 11:00-21:00 every day. During the winter, the pool is used by students at the local school. When weather permits, the pool often opens during weekends to visitors, with opening hours published on their Facebook page.
