Itinerary new

Come explore why Iceland is a leader in green energy! You'll see how they use the earth's heat to warm homes and harness the power of water to create electricity. Plus, discover how these renewable energy sources support fun activities like growing vegetables in greenhouses and relaxing in geothermal spa waters. With a knowledgeable guide, you'll enjoy a personalized tour of Iceland’s incredible energy landscape.

This tour is part of our carbon offset program. By joining us, you support our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint and promoting a sustainable future.

Hellisheidi Powerplant from above

Experience green, sustainable energy at Hellisheiði Power Plant, one of the world's largest single-site geothermal plants. It produces over 300 megawatts of electricity from steam vents. It opened in 2006 and has grown in output every year. We’ll spend about 40 minutes here. You’ll also see one of the 50 boreholes, drilled 1,000-2,200 meters (3,280-6,560 ft) deep to tap the geothermal steam.

We’ll also visit Ljósafoss Hydroelectric Power Plant on the Sog River, Iceland’s oldest, which began operating in 1937. Named after the nearby Ljósafoss waterfall, meaning "Light Falls," the tour lets you see vintage turbine equipment up close. You can ask questions about the plant, and the nearby lakes Úlfljótsvatn and Thingvallavatn add to the scenic experience.

Pool in Fontana spa in Iceland

At Friðheimar Tomato Farm, enjoy delicious dishes made from their homegrown tomatoes! Try their famous tomato soup and even tomato beer, all served right inside the greenhouse year-round. Wondering how they do it? You'll get to see how this family-run farm uses geothermal forces to heat their greenhouses, keeping the tomatoes thriving no matter the weather in Iceland.

Another stop on the route is Fontana Geothermal Spa on Lake Laugarvatn. Enjoy a tasty lunch featuring local dishes like trout and greenhouse-grown vegetables, or try traditional rye bread baked underground! Afterward, your guide will take you to the rooftop for stunning views of the mountains, lakes, and the steam rising from the hot springs.

Woman sitting by Volcano crater lake

No trip to this part of Iceland is complete without a stop at Kerið — a dramatic volcanic crater lake in Grímsnes area. While the geothermal plants show how Iceland uses the earth’s heat, Kerid lets you see the raw power that shaped this land. Once a cone volcano, it erupted, collapsed, and left behind this impressive crater. The vivid red rock, partially covered in green moss, is a stunning example of the underground forces that make Iceland’s landscape so unique.

You’ll be transported by a private vehicle. Depending on the road conditions and weather, we’ll select a car that is both safe and effective. That can be a Super Jeep, a Mercedes Benz V class, or a Sprinter. A private guide will be with you throughout the whole tour.
