In just a day, you will visit some of Iceland’s most famous natural wonders. Walk along a volcanic black sand beach, get up close to a glacier, feel the spray of towering waterfalls, and visit a charming seaside village. Every stop is a showstopper—so charge your camera and get ready for an unforgettable journey!
The trip begins with a morning pick-up in Reykjavik before we drive east over Hellisheiði pass. As we make our way through the southern lowlands, you might see steaming geothermal areas, rolling farmlands, and maybe even some Icelandic horses grazing along the way.
Our first stop is Sólheimajökull, an outlet of Mýrdalsjökull, Iceland’s fourth-largest glacier. This icy giant is constantly shifting and reshaping itself, creating deep crevasses and striking blue ice formations. You’ll have time to walk up close, take in the sheer size of the glacier, and learn about its connection to Iceland’s volcanic activity.
Next, we visit Reynisfjara, one of the most dramatic beaches in the world. With jet-black volcanic sand, towering basalt cliffs, and powerful Atlantic waves, it feels like stepping onto another planet. The towering Reynisdrangar sea stacks rise from the ocean just offshore, and during summer, puffins and other seabirds nest along the cliffs. The waves here are strong, so watch your step and take in the raw beauty of this stunning place.
We take a break in the picturesque village of Vík, the southernmost town in Iceland. Nestled between the mountains and the sea, this tiny town is full of charm. You can visit the hilltop church for a postcard-perfect view or browse the local shops for warm woolen goods and souvenirs. It’s the perfect spot to grab a snack and soak in the peaceful atmosphere before we continue the trip.
On the way back, we stop at Skógafoss, one of Iceland’s most breathtaking waterfalls. This 65-meter (213-foot) cascade crashes down with immense force, creating a constant mist that often forms vibrant rainbows on sunny days. If you’re feeling adventurous, climb the 527 steps to the viewing platform for a stunning perspective from above. The view is worth every step!
Our final stop is Seljalandsfoss, a waterfall unlike any other. A hidden pathway lets you walk behind the cascading water, giving you a completely different perspective of the falls. The trail can be slippery, but the thrill of standing inside a waterfall makes it worth it—just be prepared to get a little wet!
With hearts full of adventure and cameras packed with memories, we begin the drive back to Reykjavik. As the landscapes fade into the distance, you’ll have time to reflect on the incredible sights of the day before arriving in the city in the evening.
