Getting ready for the tour

Your adventure kayaking tour starts when you meet your guide at Stokkseyri Swimming Pool a little before the departure time. Stokkseyri is a small but charming village with cheerfully colored wooden houses, just 55 km (34.18 mi) from Reykjavík.

Your expert kayaking guide will make sure you have all the gear and equipment you need and give you some paddling instructions. Don´t worry if you have never paddled before, this tour is great for beginners because you start off on the lake, then paddle along a river, by the time you reach the sea you have well and truly got ‘the feel’ of paddling!

Beautiful scenery and lively wildlife

Kayaking from the Löngudæl Lake will take you through peaceful swaying grasses. As you paddle along narrow channels to the Hraunsá river you are surrounded by peaceful Icelandic nature and the abundant birdlife (in summer). The lush green colors of the reeds and grasses form a startling contrast to the lava landscapes which are quite dominant in Iceland.

Paddling down the Hraunsá river to the sea is very exciting and fun. Your guide is passionate and knowledgeable about local nature, which is incredibly diverse. You will learn plenty of fun facts as well as seeing great scenery as you paddle along. You will explore beautiful skerries with serene lagoons, these places are seabird habitats, and home to seal colonies. The seals can sometimes be surprisingly playful, they are not at all shy in the presence of kayak-paddling explorers!

Safe and fun paddling on the ocean

Then, we explore a little more of the ocean, you are always close to your guide and never far from the coastline – many participants say this is the most exhilarating part of their trip.

After-tour treatment

Your Kayak trip finishes at the attractive harbor in Stokkseyri. There is one more treat in store if you would like to take up the offer. All participants get the opportunity, completely free of charge, to swim in the lovely geothermal pool at Stokkseyri. We recommend you take the time to relax in the wonderfully warm pool and hot tub.

Minding nature

The guides who operate these tours are acutely aware of the preciousness of local nature. Great care has been taken to ensure your kayak trip not damage the environment.

What to bring

Warm layers, waterproof top layer, headwear, gloves, scarves, and sturdy shoes. It is very, very unlikely that water will get into the drysuit but we recommend you bring extra clothes just in case. Don´t forget your towel and bathing costume if you intend to enjoy a free swim!

What should I wear on the kayaking tours in Iceland?

We recommend that participants wear warm outdoor clothing, for example, a fleece or wool sweater and pants, change of clothing and swimwear.

How fit do you have to be to do the kayaking tours?

Our kayaking tours are all listed at a level easy or moderate so most people should be able to do the tour. Just keep in mind that the activity is an outdoor nature activity so some physical strength is needed.

Can I drink alcohol before or during Arctic Adventures tours?

No, absolutely not. Due to safety reasons, it is strictly prohibited. If we suspect that participants are intoxicated we will prohibit them from joining the tour.

Do I need an insurance before going on an Arctic Adventures trip?

We recommend that you have personal health insurance coverage when participating in any adventure activities in Iceland, we actually recommend that whenever and whereever you travel you take out a good travel insurance, as world travelers ourselves it has saved us money and aggravation many times.

What is a safety briefing?

Before starting any of our more technical trips, participants will receive a safety briefing highlighting the safe and proper use of equipment, the role of guides during the trip, and the significant risks and hazards involved in their particular trip. The safety briefing will also cover potentially foreseeable scenarios that may arise and explain how participants should react in such circumstances. Our guides will also outline their expectations of participants during the trip where needed and address any specific questions or concerns that may arise during this time.

Any medical conditions or personal health concerns that may jeopardize your well-being or affect your ability to meet the physical demands of the trip must be clearly communicated to the trip leader before the tour start. Any medications you may require for minor medical conditions (asthma inhalers, etc.), should be kept close and you should bring it with you on the trip if possible. It is important that you notify your guide about such medications and their whereabouts before setting off.

Last we would like to underline how important it is to dress according to instructions of the tour and the weather of the day. Always read the “what to bring” very well.

Can the itinerary for the tour change?

Your safety is our number one priority! Keeping this in mind, Arctic Adventures reserves the right to adjust the itinerary and/or take different routesdepending on conditions. Please read more information in our cancellation policy.
