This is one of the most unusual experiences in Iceland. You’ll float among drifting icebergs in the quiet waters of Fjallsárlón, surrounded by mountains and the outlet glacier Fjallsjökull in Vatnajökull National Park. You’ll spend about 30 minutes in the water in a buoyant immersion suit, with a certified safety instructor by your side the whole time. No previous experience or special skills are needed. To join, you’ll need to drive to Fjallsárlón, about 4.5 hours from Reykjavík.
Small Group Experience
• More attention from your guideYour experience begins at the Fjallsárlón reception, where you’ll meet your guide, sign a short waiver, and go through a safety briefing. After a short walk to the lagoon, you’ll put on a specialized immersion suit designed to keep you warm, dry, and buoyant in the icy water. You do not need swimming skills to join.
You’ll spend about 20–30 minutes floating in the lagoon with your guide nearby. The exact time in the water depends on the day’s conditions and how comfortable you feel in the cold. After the float, you’ll head back to warm up with a complimentary hot chocolate or tea at Frost Restaurant. From check-in to the end of the experience, the tour takes about 1.5 hours.
The float location changes with the season and daily conditions. In summer, the experience usually takes place at a quieter area farther out on the lagoon, reached by a short transfer from reception. In winter, it runs closer to the main base. Your guide chooses the best location for the day.
Meeting Point
Fjallsárlón reception is located in Öræfi in Southeast Iceland, about 380 km (236 miles) from Reykjavík and around 10 km (6 miles) west of Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon.
Free parking is available on site. This is a meet-on-location tour, so you’ll need to arrange your own transport. Before setting out, especially in winter, check road and weather conditions on Umferdin and Vedur.
