Your day tour begins at The Parking of Icelandair Hotel by Lake Mývatn. You'll board a Super Jeep and get transported into the realm of raw volcanic beauty and the geological wonders of the Icelandic Highlands. Prepare to be awestruck by the magical scenery of Askja Caldera, hike to the turquoise waters of Viti Crater, and traverse the otherworldly terrain of the Holuhraun Lava Field.

Herðubreiðarlindir Oasis & Outlaw’s Hut

We will start our day at Herðubreiðarlindir, a haven of fresh springs bordering the vast Ódáðahraun Lava Field. Here, you will enjoy a guided walk to the shelter of a famous outlaw from 1775 or relax by the stream and soak up the tranquility of the Icelandic Highlands.

Askja Caldera & Viti Crater

The next stop is Askja Caldera, the star destination of the journey. Thanks to a flexible schedule, the guide will choose the optimal time for the highlight of the day: hiking the 2.5km trail to the Víti explosion crater. This exciting Askja hike is easy to moderate in difficulty, depending on snow and weather, and takes about 35 to 45 minutes one way.

When we reach Víti Crater, you will admire its unique geology and absorb its serene atmosphere. You can take a refreshing dip in the crater lake (in the late summer), hike along the caldera rim, or simply relax and enjoy the surroundings. Explore Askja at your own pace before heading back to the Super Jeep for further adventures. Expect to spend 2.5-3.5 hours at Askja.

Remember, this is an 11-13 hour trip into the wild. To conquer the day, pack enough food and water for the entire trip. We recommend bringing sustenance for two meals, snacks, and ample water. A scenic picnic stop awaits at Dreki mountain hut, but plan accordingly.

Can I drink alcohol before or during Arctic Adventures tours?

Before and during activities on the multi-day tours consumption of alcohol is prohibited. If we suspect that a participant is intoxicated, we will prohibit them from joining the activity.

After the activities of the day are finished, you are welcome to have a drink and relax.

Do you offer any family friendly tours, for younger children?

Yes, we do. Langjökull Ice Cave is a magical experience, the tour has no minimum age and is a wonderful option for the whole family. Whale Watching with our partner company Elding has been a favourite with families traveling with young children, these guys have a great success rate in seeing whales (upwards of 98% in the summertime).

Another option would be the Landmannalaugar Safari on this tour you get to explore parts of the Icelandic highlands and bathe in natural hot springs.
