Itinerary

Your adventure kayaking tour starts when you meet your guide at Stokkseyri Swimming Pool a little before the departure time. Stokkseyri is a small but charming village with cheerfully colored wooden houses, just 55 km (34.18 mi) from Reykjavík.

Your expert kayaking guide will make sure you have all the gear and equipment you need and give you some paddling instructions. Don´t worry if you have never paddled before, this tour is great for beginners because you start off on the lake, then paddle along a river, and by the time you reach the sea you have well and truly got ‘the feel’ of paddling!

Kayaking from the Löngudæl Lake will take you through peaceful swaying grasses. As you paddle along narrow channels to the Hraunsá river you are surrounded by peaceful Icelandic nature and the abundant birdlife (in summer). The lush green colors of the reeds and grasses form a startling contrast to the lava landscapes which are quite dominant in Iceland.

Paddling down the Hraunsá river to the sea is very exciting and fun. Your guide is passionate and knowledgeable about local nature, which is incredibly diverse. You will learn plenty of fun facts as well as seeing great scenery as you paddle along. You will explore beautiful skerries with serene lagoons, these places are seabird habitats, and home to seal colonies. The seals can sometimes be surprisingly playful, they are not at all shy in the presence of kayak-paddling explorers!

Then, we explore a little more of the ocean, you are always close to your guide and never far from the coastline - many participants say this is the most exhilarating part of their trip.

Your Kayak trip finishes at the attractive harbor in Stokkseyri. There is one more treat in store if you would like to take up the offer. All participants get the opportunity, completely free of charge, to swim in the lovely geothermal pool at Stokkseyri. We recommend you take the time to relax in the wonderfully warm pool and hot tub.

FAQ

We recommend that participants wear warm outdoor clothing, for example, a fleece or wool sweater and pants. You should also bring a change of clothing and swimwear.

No prior kayaking experience is required for the tours as our professional guides will teach the technique on location.

Our kayaking tours are all listed at a level easy or moderate so most people should be able to do the tour. Just keep in mind that the activity is an outdoor nature activity so some physical strength is needed.

All our kayaking tours are operated by experienced and certified professional 4 star BCU sea kayak guides.

We use top of the line plastic sea kayaks.

Our kayaks are very stable and easy to use.

Yes, they can tip over, although they are very stable and it happens rarely. If they tip over the guide has the necessary equipment and ability to quickly tip them over again.

If the kayaks tip over participants don’t have to worry too much, all participants get life jackets and neoprene suits so they will stay warm even if they fall in.

Taking a waterproof camera is a great idea when going on a kayak tour. However, it is not recommended to take too much on this day tour as there is really no need for it.

Although you don’t need to “swim” while sea kayaking, we recommend that you can. People that can’t swim tend to panic when they are in the water. You have to be comfortable with floating in water.
