About tour

A short drive out of Reykjavík, one family keeps a pack of top-performing Siberian huskies. They're house pets as much as sled dogs, exercised year-round and not only in winter. The ride is the centerpiece, with your guide on board and the team out front.

Out on the trail, it goes quiet, down to paws and not much else. A good stretch of the visit is spent among the dogs, and the people who raised them tell you their names and what each one is like.

Itinerary

An email before the tour gives you the exact meeting point, since it shifts with the snow. It's roughly a 20-minute drive from downtown Reykjavík on a well-maintained road, with secure on-site parking for cars and campervans. The family that keeps the kennel meets you when you pull in.

You're taken straight to the pack, and nothing is rushed. This is where you hear how the huskies are cared for and how their training changes with the seasons, from the sled in winter to bikes, skis, and scooters when the ground is bare. The family races competitively from the south of Iceland to the north, so questions about the sport get a proper answer.

Your guide covers the briefing before anyone moves: how the steering works and your own part in the journey, driver or passenger. Thermal overalls go on over the layers you've brought.

The team is harnessed, keen to get going at the start before settling into a rhythm. The terrain and the weather set the pace from there, so expect some quick stretches and some calmer ones, with your guide on board throughout.

The dogs rest once you're back, and you get a little longer with them while a snack and a hot drink come out. Take your photos with the huskies and the guides before you go, and stay to talk to the family about the dogs and their years in the sport if you've got the time.

  • The starting point changes with snow conditions, and you'll get an email the day before your tour with the exact location.
  • This tour needs a minimum of two people per booking.
  • Plan for about an hour in total, covering the ride and the time spent with the dogs.
  • Each sled seats up to five, and groups are kept small on purpose. Larger parties can be split across multiple sleds, with extra guides on request.
  • Transport to the farm isn't included, so you'll need your own vehicle. Get in touch with us if you'd like directions.
  • Icelandic weather turns quickly, so dress for the cold. Thermal overalls are provided, but wear warm layers underneath, and leave the jeans behind since denim holds the wet and the chill.
  • Whether you ride as a passenger or take the driving position depends on the departure, and it's confirmed before your tour. The dogs' well-being comes first, so that call rests with your guide.
  • This is a meet-on-location tour, so there's no hotel pickup.
  • The kennel is about a 20-minute drive from downtown Reykjavík, on a road that's well maintained whatever the weather.
  • Secure parking is available on-site for cars and campervans.
  • The exact spot depends on where sledding is possible that week; you’ll receive an e-mail with this information the day before.
