Your day starts with a visit to the world under a lava field where you get the chance to witness how the volcanoes created Iceland. Depending on the season you will either visit Gjábakkahellir (Gjabakkahellir) or Leiðarendi (Leidarendi) cave. This is an amazing hike through an ancient underground lava tube. After the hike, you will head onwards to Gullfoss (the Golden waterfall), the undisputed queen of Icelandic waterfalls. Gullfoss is truly a great sight to admire, with water rushing down three steps of lava layers exhibiting breathtaking power and grandeur. After a short lunch stop, you will then head to the geothermal area of Geysir, home of the famous erupting hot spring. Come and watch the heated water gurgle, bubble, and escape the ground with enormous force up to 25 meters high. Your last stop will be the historic Þingvellir National Park (en. Parliament Fields). Þingvellir is a UNESCO world heritage site and the original birthplace of the oldest existing parliament in the world. It is also the place where the tectonic plates of America and Europe meet with a clearly visible rift valley. You will learn about the Vikings and their meetings here as well as the geological forces of nature that have formed the national park. Your day tour will end with a drop off to your hotel in Reykjavik after exploring all of these must see’s of Iceland.
