The total solar eclipse in Iceland took place on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, in the late afternoon. The path of totality crossed western Iceland: the Westfjords, the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, Reykjavík, and the Reykjanes Peninsula, where the moon fully covered the sun for about 1 to 2 minutes.
Iceland hadn't seen a total eclipse since 1954 and won't see another until 2196. Below, we look back at how the day unfolded, what our guides witnessed inside the path, and where you can catch the next one.
Why the 2026 Iceland Solar Eclipse Was a Historic Event

On August 12, 2026, Iceland entered the path where the Moon completely covered the Sun, briefly turning late afternoon into darkness. The event was the country's first total solar eclipse in 72 years.
Total solar eclipses occur somewhere on Earth roughly every year or two, but totality is visible only within a narrow path. Anyone outside that band sees a partial eclipse instead. On August 12, 2026, parts of western Iceland lay within the path of totality, making the event exceptionally rare.
Before 2026, Iceland’s most recent total solar eclipse occurred in 1954, 72 years earlier. For many Icelanders and visitors, the 2026 eclipse was therefore a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
During this celestial show, the Moon blocked the Sun's light. At the start and end of the process, there was a partial eclipse, which made the Sun look a bit like a cookie with a bite taken out of it. The total phase brought a few minutes of darkness and refreshing coolness, letting spectators see the Sun's outer atmosphere glowing like a halo around the Moon.

The 2026 Eclipse Path

The eclipse path of totality is where the Moon completely covered the Sun, turning day into night for a short while. To see this full effect, viewers have to be within a specific area, usually about 100 miles (160 km) wide. This line moves across the Earth, changing location with each eclipse. Everywhere outside this band, viewers experience only a partial eclipse.
The 2026 path of totality began in the Arctic, crossed Greenland, and then swept over western Iceland: the Westfjords, the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, Reykjavík, and the Reykjanes Peninsula. The eclipse ended over northern Spain and a small part of Portugal.
Outside the path of totality, the rest of Iceland experienced a deep partial eclipse, with more than 95% of the Sun covered. Akureyri, the main town in the north, reached about 98%, while Höfn, in the southeast, reached about 96%. For the most impressive view, observers needed to be in one of the regions mentioned above.

Timing and location decided how people experienced the eclipse. The partial phase began across Iceland at 4:47 PM local time. Totality then moved from west to east, reaching the Westfjords first and the Reykjanes Peninsula last.

The Sun stood low in the west-southwest during totality, about 24 to 25 degrees above the horizon. Open coastal viewpoints had the clearest sightline because hills and buildings could not block the western sky.
Totality lasted about 1 to 2 minutes, depending on the exact viewpoint. Látrabjarg cliff in the Westfjords had the longest totality on land at 2 minutes 13 seconds. Hellissandur had about 2 minutes 7 seconds, while Reykjavík had about 1 minute. The full event, from the start of the partial phase to the end, lasted about 2 hours.
Where People Watched and How Long the Totality Lasted
Totality length depended on where you stood. The farther west and the closer to the center of the path, the longer the darkness lasted. Here is how long the sky went dark at the main viewing spots.

The Westfjords held the longest totality on land. Many watched from Rauðisandur beach, where red-gold sand and a broad western horizon framed the changing light. Látrabjarg cliffs lay farther west, while towns such as Patreksfjörður and Ísafjörður provided more services than the remote coast.
The Reykjanes Peninsula gave viewers easy access from the capital area and Keflavík. Spectators gathered at Garður Lighthouse on the peninsula's northwest coast. Garðskagi headland had about 1 minute 44 seconds of totality, with an open view over Faxaflói bay.
The Snæfellsnes Peninsula placed viewers close to the center of the totality path. Hellissandur and Rif towns received just over 2 minutes of totality. Our guests and guides used Adventure Hotel Hellissandur as a base while cloud and drizzle moved across the peninsula.
On the Ground: What Our Guides Saw in the Path of Totality

Arctic Adventures offered several ways to experience the eclipse, including a Snæfellsnes minibus tour, a Super Jeep tour, a six-day Ring Road itinerary with eclipse viewing built in, and private minibus and Super Jeep options. The firsthand accounts below come from our guides on Snæfellsnes, including those who supported a private family group based at Adventure Hotel Hellissandur.
The Icelandic Met Office’s final forecast called for showers in southwest Iceland, with the best chance of cloud breaks in the Westfjords. Around totality, conditions varied between our four locations.
In Hellissandur town on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, the sky became increasingly cloudy and drizzle developed. The nearby Gufuskálar weather station recorded 10.8°C (51°F) and east-northeasterly winds of 5.4 m/s (12 mph). At Rauðisandur beach in the Westfjords, conditions were cloudy, although we have no confirmed report of rain. The nearby Lambavatn weather station recorded 11.7°C (53°F) and west-northwesterly winds of 2.2 m/s (5 mph).
Near Garður Lighthouse on the Reykjanes Peninsula, the staffed weather station at Keflavík Airport reported overcast skies and light drizzle. Garðskagaviti weather station recorded 12.3°C (54°F) and north-northeasterly winds of 5.2 m/s (12 mph). In Reykjavík in the Capital Region, the Reykjavík weather station reported overcast skies with rain showers, 14.9°C (59°F) and easterly winds of 2.5 m/s (6 mph), according to archived Icelandic Met Office observations.
Cloud is common in Iceland in August. Long-term averages put cloud cover at roughly 60 to 70%, while typical daytime highs reach about 14 to 15°C (57 to 59°F). Clear skies would have revealed the Sun's corona, but the cloud didn’t erase totality. Our guests still watched the afternoon light fall away, felt the temperature dip, and heard cheering from spectators as darkness arrived.

Our driver guide Freysteinn Gíslason led a private family group of 22, based at Adventure Hotel Hellissandur. The family used their bus as a base during the day and gathered at the hotel in the afternoon. As cloud and drizzle increased, guests worried that they might miss the eclipse. The mood changed when the landscape darkened, and the group began cheering. Looking west across the sea, Freysteinn saw light return first to distant land before it appeared to move back toward Snæfellsnes.
Our day tour guide Þórhallur Ævar noticed how quickly the living world responded. Arctic terns were loud before totality. Once darkness arrived, he could hear only about three birds. He and two other guides saw an evening-like glow on the western horizon and felt a cold breeze behind them.
Then, like opening a curtain slowly, everything got bright again. The birds got loud again, and the temperature rose by about 5°C in two minutes.

Totality changed more than the sky. Light faded, colors flattened, the air cooled, and birds reacted as if evening had arrived. Thick cloud kept some viewers from seeing the corona clearly, yet the Moon's shadow still turned a late-summer afternoon into dusk.

When Is the Next Solar Eclipse in Iceland?
Iceland's next total solar eclipse will not arrive until June 26, 2196. That made August 12, 2026, a once-in-a-lifetime event for everyone in the path. No one reading this is likely to see totality over Iceland again.
Solar eclipses will still cross Iceland before then. Reykjavík's next one will be a partial solar eclipse on August 2, 2027, when the Moon will cover only a small part of the Sun. The 2026 account above therefore stands as a record of what full totality over Iceland looked and felt like.

The next total solar eclipse will cross southern Spain, North Africa, and the Middle East on August 2, 2027. NASA calculates a maximum shadow-path width of about 258 km (160 mi) and a maximum totality of 6 minutes 23 seconds near Luxor, Egypt. No total solar eclipse before 2114 will have a longer maximum duration.
The safety rules will not change. Use certified eclipse glasses during every partial phase. Remove them only after the Sun's bright face is completely covered, then put them back on as soon as sunlight returns. Never look through a camera, binoculars, or telescope without a proper solar filter fitted to the front of the device. NASA's eclipse safety guidance explains the approved viewing methods.

Winds remained light to moderate at 2.2 to 5.4 m/s (5 to 12 mph). Clouds obscured the Sun and corona at times, but the darkness of totality remained unmistakable.
