Itinerary

This tour begins at Hotel Smyrlabjörg, located near Vatnajökull glacier, Europe’s largest ice cap. You’ll travel in a Super Jeep, a specially modified vehicle designed for Iceland’s rough terrain. The route crosses Suðurfjörur black sand beach. Along the way, you’ll pass the remains of the area’s first local airstrip and stop at Hvanneyjarviti lighthouse, a coastal beacon overlooking the Atlantic.

Your journey continues toward Höfn town, known for having one of Iceland’s most challenging harbor entrances due to shifting sandbanks and strong currents. The surrounding coastline and nearby mountains create a dramatic setting. Seals are often seen here, resting in the water or swimming near the shore, especially in calmer conditions.

Next, the tour heads inland to a quiet glacial lagoon beneath either Fláajökull or Heinabergsjökull, both outlet glaciers of Vatnajökull. Here, lagoons change with the seasons and ice movement, making each visit unique. While driving through this remote area, you may spot wild reindeer, native to southeast Iceland and often traveling in groups across open land.

Throughout the tour, your experienced driver-guide shares clear, engaging stories about the region’s nature and history. Their local knowledge adds helpful context to the landscapes you visit and helps you better understand how glaciers, coastline, and wildlife shape this part of Iceland.

The meeting point is at the operator's base camp, which is located just by Hotel Smyrlabjörg, 46 km (28.6 mi) west from the town of Höfn and 34 km (21.1 mi) east from Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon.
