We drive you to the very attractive town of Hveragerði, around 40 minutes from Reykjavík. This little town is a real hot spring community, with many geothermally heated green houses growing vegetables and fruits. It is also famous for its beautiful flowers and gardens.

Your hike starts from the outskirts of Hveragerði, the town of hot springs and flowers. With a professional hiking guide you will explore the magnificent hot spring valley of Reykjadalur, following a trail through magical mountain scenery. You are heading for the hot spring river, often called ‘Steam Valley’, hot water flows down and blends with a cool water source in the river, giving a perfect temperature for bathing. Today, on your Reykjavík trekking tour, our sturdy Super Jeep will take you across tumbling glacial rivers on the way to Þórsmörk (Thorsmork). This is quite an adventure and something which should never be attempted in a regular car. On the way we stop at a very beautiful and really unusual waterfall, Seljalandsfoss, you can actually walk behind the tumbling cascade, the first of many great photo opportunities today.

Your hike will take you up from the gentle greenery and birch trees of Þórsmörk valley all the way to the high mountain pass at Fimmvörðuháls. This trail is rated as challenging but it is also one of the most exciting treks ever, rated as a top 20 trail by National Geographic. You will see great hanging glaciers, powerful glacial rivers and some of the most extraordinary scenery on the planet. We will explore the new lava field, Góðaland, formed in the first eruption of 2010, seeing the new lava craters, Magni and Móði, named after sons of the Norse God, Þór. The names mean strong and brave. You will be close to the iconic volcano mountain glaciers, Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull all day, as you head back to Þórsmörk you will pass Mount Einhyrningur (Unicorn Mountain). This hike has it all, stupendous scenery, glacier views, gorges, mountains and new lava. We return to Reykjavík at around 22:00.
Hiking: 16 km, elevation gain 700 m to 800 m, classified as challenging.

The final day of your Reykjavík hiking vacation will take you to Landmannalaugar in a really remote part of the stunning Icelandic Highlands. In olden times the people who traveled across the land would stop here to bathe in the hot spring pool, today this place is a favorite with adventure seeking Icelanders. Landmannalaugar, meaning 'the People´s Pools', is, not surprisingly, in a highly geothermally active area, which has resulted in incredibly colorful rhyolite mountains. After our hike we will relax in the bathing pool, as steam rises surreally from the surface of the water and multiple hot springs around the area.

Your hiking adventure will take you over the Laugahraun lava field, through the Vondugil Canyon and up to Mount Brennisteinsalda, often described as the most colorful mountain in Iceland, although you will see many colorful peaks. Returning you will go through Grænagil, which means 'the Green Gorge', the dominant color of the rhyolite in this area is green! If time allows we will summit of Bláhnúkur (the Blue Volcano) before enjoying the hot pool at Landmannalaugar. We return to Reykjavík at around 20:00.
Hiking: 8 to 10 km, classified as a moderate.

Remember to bring: Warm and waterproof outdoor clothing is extremely important. Warm layers, waterproof jacket and pants, headwear, gloves, scarf, lunch, plenty of snacks, water bottle and good hiking boots.
