From the birch forests of Þórsmörk you will have sensational views of the towering volcano mountain glaciers, Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull, home to the ominous Katla. Your hike will take you to the Fimmvörðuhals mountain pass, right between them! This is where the first 2010 eruption happened, see Góðaland, the new lava field and the new volcano craters, Magni and Móði, named after sons of Þór. Golden Circle & Secret Lagoon – Þingvellir National Park, Gullfoss, Geysir and the Secret Lagoon
There are three parts to the Golden Circle: Geysir, home to the famous hot spring which gave us the English word ‘Geyser’, see torrents of boiling water being erupted 25 m or higher! The geologically amazing, Þingvellir National Park, has the Mid-Atlantic Ridge running through it, right where Iceland´s historic parliament, Alþingi, the oldest continuous parliament in the world, was founded in 930 CE. Þingvellir is a UNESCO listed World Heritage Site. Last, but not least, is Gullfoss waterfall, (the Golden Falls), feel the spray in the air and the sheer power of nature as the roaring water forces its way through the rough, high canyon, dropping 32 m in two stages.

Now for some serious relaxation! The Secret Lagoon natural spring bathing pool is in the picturesque area of Flúðir. The lagoon is in wonderful surroundings and it is a perfect temperature for bathing. There are seating areas, walking paths and a small geyser in the area around the pool. This is the perfect place to enjoy bathing out in unspoiled Icelandic nature. What is the Golden Circle tour in Iceland?

The Golden Circle is a name for the very popular sightseeing route that connects Reykjavík with Þingvellir National Park (Thingvellir), Geysir Hot Springs and Gullfoss Waterfall. We offer several Golden Circle trips that combine sightseeing with some of our adventure tours.

Do you offer a tour that is solely the Golden Circle?

Yes, we offer the tour Golden Circle small group tour which is basically the Golden Circle with some extra stops. This tour is focusing on sightseeing and the history of Iceland. Our stops are Gullfoss waterfall, Þingvellir national park (home to one of the first parliaments of the world), Geysir hot spring area and the historic Skálholt cathedral. View Golden Circle Tours.

Is there any drinking water along the trail?

Yes, you can fill your water bottles with tap water at the huts/campsites. It’s perfectly safe to drink. There are also a few streams along the way with safe drinking water, just ask your guide.

Are gaiters necessary?

Gaiters are optional but we always recommend that our participants use them. The weather in Iceland can be quite wet so the trails subsequently get wet as well. They are not necessary but being drenched on a hike when conditions are wet and muddy is very unpleasant. Some rain pants have straps at the bottom which serve a similar purpose as gaiters so if you are equipped with those you don’t need both.

Are hiking poles necessary?

Hiking poles are also optional. The choice of using them or not of course depends on your own personal preference. Note that we do recommend hiking poles if you are used to hiking with them.

What if I don’t own all of these clothing necessaries?

Don’t worry, you can always rent sturdy hiking shoes, waterproof jacket and pants in the booking process or add it to your booking using this link. Please keep in mind that we do not rent gear on location.

What type of weather can I expect? What should I wear?

First of all, check the weather forecast but keep in mind that the weather in Iceland can be extremely unpredictable, as you may have heard. We have a saying “If you don’t like the weather in Iceland, just wait 5 minutes” which is sometimes disturbingly accurate!

The weather can be anything from sunny to snowy in almost any season although snow is rare during summer time. We do suggest that you dress accordingly. This means in layers, thermal closest to you and waterproof on top. We’ve prepared a guide to help you get ready for your adventures, check out – How to prepare for hiking and trekking in Iceland.

Can I wear jeans and sneakers?

No, please do not wear jeans and sneakers on this tour, it’s not appropriate clothing for this type of tour. It’s a long day of hiking so jeans and sneakers will quickly uncomfortable. Check the list of what to bring to see what kind of clothing is appropriate.

All our tours are undertaken on the responsibility of its participants. Arctic Adventures does not assume any responsibility for accidents that are caused by its customers or can be traced to their own actions. Participants have to sign a waiver before undertaking all trips stating that they realize that all outdoor activities carry an inherent risk.
