Geothermal powers set Iceland apart from most other destinations. Why not experience this phenomenon for yourself? Take your passion for underwater exploration to the next level as you dive into tectonic fissures known for their geothermal activity.

  • Two Diving Locations
  • Diving In Volcanic Fissures
  • Ocean Water And Freshwater Dive
  • Shipwreck And Old Crab Hatchery

Bjarnagjá and Kleifarvatn are the two diving locations you’ll explore during this day tour. Both of them feature interesting geothermal activity among other attractions. You too can dive in and among reverse waterfalls of bubbles, which rise from the geothermal pockets underneath these fissures.

The air from below gets pushed through porous rocks. Don’t be scared or surprised if you feel slight vibrations coming from the surrounding rocks! It is perfectly safe and truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

As a bonus, Bjarnagjá proudly features an abandoned shipwreck and an old crab hatchery. You’ll get to take a peek inside during this tour.

We start our adventure at Kleifarvatn, a brooding lake famous for its intense geothermal activity. The first signs are impossible to miss as the smell of sulfur greets us from the shore.  We’ll finish adjusting our equipment and dive in to discover where it comes from. All around you small bubbles will rise from the ground and form upside-down waterfalls.

As we approach a crater located in the middle of the lake, you’ll feel intense vibrations. Don’t be alarmed! The pressure that builds up underneath the lake’s floor is behind this peculiar and rare occurrence. This experience alone is why taking a dip in Kleifarvatn will be unforgettable.

Bjarnagjá is an 18m deep lava ravine, a testament to tectonic activity in Iceland. You will experience it during your second dive. If you choose to dive there, you won’t need to make a choice between freshwater and saltwater diving you can do both! While the fissure is mostly filled with fresh groundwater, the ocean is only several hundred meters away. Thus salt water influences its microclimate quite significantly and helps shape a unique ecosystem.

A huge shipwreck sits quietly in this rift. You’ll feel as if you’re on a real treasure hunt when you glide around it! Striking submerged caverns and an old crab hatchery are two other attractions in Bjarnagjá.
