Sólheimajökull glacier hike is a perfect way to spend the day out of Reykjavík. This tour is available all year around with pick up from Reykjavík.
The pick up starts at 8 am, be ready at your pick up location. Please note, that the pick up can take up to 30 min. If you want to meet us at the glacier, check out our Glacier Experience.
After pick up we drive in an easterly direction out of the city on our way to the glacier. Once there, you get crampons and helmet and safety instructions before we walk to the edge of the glacier over black volcanic ash. Once we reach Sólheimajökull, an outlet glacier of Mýrdalsjökull, we put our glacier gear on and set foot on the ice. Sólheimajökull is quite rugged and as we make our way over the glacier you can expect to be exploring a unique territory. Below the glacier tongue lies the fast growing lagoon, but in the last years, it has almost doubled in size due to the retreat of the glacier. We will choose a different route down the glacier again.
The hiking part of the tour is about 2 hours with an hour spent on the glistening glacier.
On our way back to Reykjavík we stop at two of the most magnificent waterfalls in Iceland, Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss.
Remeber to bring: Warm outdoor clothing, waterproof jacket and pants, headwear and gloves. Good hiking shoes are recommended.
What if I don’t own all of these clothing necessaries?
Don’t worry, you can always rent sturdy hiking shoes, waterproof jacket and pants in the booking process. We do not rent gear from location.
We meet you at Sólheimajökull parking lot and the distance from Reykjavik is approx. 164 km / 101 mi. The drive takes around 2-2,5 hours.

We signed up for a glacier hike on Sólheimajökull. We expected it to be cool; however, we didn’t realize just how spectacular it would be!! Our guide (I wish I remembered her name), was so knowledgable, and this adventure really felt like an otherworldly experience–truly one of the highlights of our week in Iceland. I highly recommend anyone visiting Iceland sign up for this trek!
“Glacier Experience from Reykjavik”
Fantastic tour! My sister and I were picked up from our Reykjavik hotel, and we slept on the two to three hour drive to Solheimajokull glacier where we met up with our glacier guide Hjortar, who went by Olaf. For a first timer, the glacier hike was absolutely amazing with breathtaking views (the weather was great) and plenty of time to walk about (~1.5 hours on the glacier) and take pictures. After the glacier hike, we joined another Arctic Adventures tour group led by Yannis. Both Olaf and Yannis were both very knowledgeable and super friendly! Yannis took us to both Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss waterfalls, which were about 20-30 min drives from each other, and we spent about 20-30 min at each place, which could have been longer, but was enough for us. Awesome tour and highly recommended!
"Amazing glacier hike"
Ryan from Scotland was a wonderful guide for our family of five’s hike on the glacier in July. He was very knowledgeable about the dynamics of the glacier. A truly unforgettable experience!
