From Chris

All,

Just a quick email to say thank you so much for your help in organising the trip to Iceland. It was, not to put to fine a point on it, SPECTACULAR. Everything that could have happened did – a mountain rescue, an amazing hotel, a meal of whale meat and puffin at Lækjarbrekka, cocktail fun at Orange and a light poaching at the Blue Lagoon. And to round it all off: an Icelandic psychic on the plane home who gave everyone “dream pebbles”. Seriously. The whole thing still feels faintly surreal and dream-like, to be honest.

But the best bit? The dive. Was just utterly, utterly incredible. Not that you can tell from these pics, but this is me but this is me at Þingvellir - 40m down in glacial water with 100m visibility:

It was one of the highlights of my life. Seriously. Genuinely awe-inspiringly beautiful. Hedinn was a superb dive master, and gave me all the help and encouragement I needed. And with the our great jeep story as well (thanks to our guide Ragi – a really great guy), I think it’s going to make a great piece.

So thank you so much for your help organising it – everything worked like clockwork, and we both had an amazing time. I’ll be in touch nearer the time when we start laying out the feature, but until then, thanks again..

Detailed itinerary:

Day 1 / Monday
The trip starts on Monday morning at 9:30 with an ATV (also called quad bikes) adventure on the Hellisheiði mountain. There we will cruise through the lava fields and have great time exploring this volcanic mountain range on the outskirts of Reykjavik City. We are back in Reykjavik at 13:00 and after a lunch (not included) you will visit the Blue Lagoon and relax in the famous hot spring.

Day 2 / Tuesday
On Tuesday we explore the hidden world of the lava field between Þingvellir and Laugarvatn. Walking into the cave, discovering the marvels that the volcanic activity has created. The second adventure of the day is a surreal and breathtaking snorkeling visit to the Silfra ravine in the heart of the park. The Silfra is located on the boundary between America and Europe and offers crystal clear underwater views of the lava fissure. Silfra is one of the top ten dive sites in the world and it’s even better for snorkeling.

Day 3 / Wednesday
On Wednesday we start with a hike to the amazing hot spring area of Reykjadalur valley where we take a relaxing bath in a hot river… a fairly easy but rewarding trek in to mountains riddled with hot springs. Heading to Eldhestar horse farm for lunch, followed by a horse riding trip around the farm. A great chance to experience the unique Icelandic horse and its abilities.

Day 4 / Thursday
This is our glacier day! We will driver along the beautiful South Shore and visit the rugged, breathtaking Sólheimajökul outlet glacier. There we will walk on the ancient ice and learn about how it is created and how it continues to move and change every day. We will also try out ice climbing on one of the glacier walls. On the way back we will stop at the 62 meter high Skógafoss waterfall.

Day 5 / Friday
On Friday morning we head out for an amazing visit to the Golden Circle. There we will see the Geysir hot spring area, the Gullfoss waterfall and Þingvellir national park. We dine at Drumbo base camp before we raft the beautiful and exciting Hvítá river. Afterwards you can relax in the hot tubs or sauna.
